History of Academy

The Saint Petersburg State Medical Academy (SPbSMA) dates back to the Psychoneurological Institute which was founded in 1907 by well-known psychiatrist, Academician V.M. Bekhterev. Name of an outstanding Russian scientist and Nobel prizer in medicine I.I. Mechnikov was given to the Academy in 1995. SPbSMA named after I.I. Mechnikov has the 100 years of proud tradition of educat­ing Russian and International students. More than 35 000 physi­cians graduated from the years of its existence, including 4000 in­ternational graduates from more than 60 countries worldwide. Now among 5000 total student population we have about 800 interna­tional students.

The training of the students from foreign countries in Academy has begun since 1947. From 1997 the training of international students is conducted also in English medium.

The Academy today

The Academy is situated in a splendid park with a total area of 40000 square meters, encompasses 63 clinical and academic departments, main clinical hospital named after Peter the Great having 1000 beds with modern diagnostic and operative equipments. There are 25 af­filiated city hospitals and research centers with total number of 6000 beds, Hi-Tech Research and clinical centers like North-West Center for Cardio-Vascular diseases with operative cardiology, Center for Treatment of arrhythmias, Center for Hepatology, Center for Eye’s Micro-surgery , Center of Orthopedics and traumatology and oth­ers eminent centers.

There are about 600 teaching staff, including 95 D.sc., 370 Ph.D., 82 Professors, 155 Ass. Professors.

Rector of Academy, Professor A.V. Shabrov is the Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and Fellow of many pro­fessional international societies.

Today Saint Petersburg State Medical Academy named after I.I. Mechnikov is one of the biggest educational, scientific and medi­cal establishments whose specialists are developing the best 100 years traditions of the famous founders and researchers of Academy.

The Academy is recognized by WHO, ECFMG (USA), GMC (UK), Medical Councils of India, Australia, United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, Germany, Finland, Norway and others countries.
